Simple Creatures is the latest band to sit down for NME's "Band Vs. Band" video segment, and while we learned things like Mark Hoppus' favorite All Time Low song and Alex Gaskarth's favorite blink-182 song, Mark's hidden talents (he can sing the alphabet backwards and memorized the Nato Phonetic Alphabet, and that Mark really despises karaoke and magic, one question that came with a more poignant answer was "What does punk mean in 2019?"
"I think that it is less about a style of music or the way that you dress and more about how you approach your life,” Mark says. “I’ve always kind of felt like that. There’s been a punk rock attitude in hip-hop forever. There are punk rock country artists. The blurring of the lines in musical genres right now is really exciting and cool.”
“The mentality of ‘punk’ music got adopted by other genres," Alex adds. "I think rock is now playing catch-up to that.”
It's that ideology that led the duo to create their supergroup Simple Creatures, which recently dropped its first EP Strange Love and already has a second album in the works. The two-piece describes itself as "Trash Pop" and considers The Clash a large influence.
