RuPaul is wrapping up another season of Drag Race, but you can expect plenty more from Momma Ru at the top of 2020.
During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the LGBTQ icon admitted that his upcoming comedy series, AJ and the Queen, has been slotted for programming. "AJ and the Queen is a show on Netflix, that comes out in January, that was created by Michael Patrick King and myself," he told the outlet on the floor of DragCon L.A. this past weekend. "It is the most challenging thing I’ve ever done because it’s acting like a real human. Usually in acting roles I play the gay best friend or the neighbor. This is a fully rounded human being with all of the emotions. We shot that for five months. We were in the writers room for two months. I had to memorize pages and pages of dialogue. It was a challenge, but I’m so proud of it."
AJ and the Queen, which will span 10 hourlong episodes, is about "a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club in a rundown 1990s R/V with her unlikely sidekick AJ, a recently orphaned, tough-talking, scrappy 11-year-old stowaway."
The show sees RuPaul as a writer and executive producer alongside King, who has worked as a Sex and the City showrunner. He has also contributed to series like The Comeback and 2 Broke Girls.
