Authorities in New York say two people were killed after their small Beechcraft A36 crashed near near Harbes Family Farm in Mattituck. A dog on board the plane survived the crash.
The plane went down early Saturday morning around 9:15 a.m. shortly after taking off from Long Island MacArthur Airport. Only two people and the dog were on board. When emergency crews arrived on scene, the plane was reportedly in flames.
No one on the ground was injured by the crash.
A farmer was able to catch the dog after it managed to escape the crash, the Southold Town Police Department said in a statement.
The victims were taken to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office. Their names have been withheld until their families could be notified.
The plane went down near Harbes Family Farm, a type of theme park where families can take their children to pick their own fruits and vegetables, listen to music and even go through a corn maze on the property.
The family farm issued a statement saying the plane had flown right over their property before the crash.
"We're saddened by the tragic plane crash this morning in a field on our Mattituck farm. Thankfully, no one on the ground was injured, but sadly, two people perished in the crash. Our prayers tonight are with the victims and their families," the statement read.
Authorities with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash to find out what went wrong.
