Chris Shiflett Explains How He Maintains Solo Career While In Foo Fighters

Chris Shiflett won't or can't stay off the road for very long.

The Foo Fighters' guitarist keeps pretty busy playing in one of the biggest rock bands in the world. But when he's not jetting around the globe rocking stadiums and arenas with the Foos, he's driving around in a van playing his solo music in clubs all over.

Shiflett suggests to Q104.3 New York's Out of the Box with Jonathan Clarke that the Foos environment feeds his creative motivation and the van tours on his own or with his solo band keep him humble.

"We've been on a little bit of a rest — I mean, I haven't personally been on a rest," Shiflett says of the Foos' break earlier in the year. "We finished the Foo Fighters tour and I got in a van and started driving around America playing little acoustic shows (laughs) and going on tour and stuff. So yeah, I'm a little frazzled."

It's exhausting, Shiflett admits, but it's also the only career he's known for the past 20 years. There's nothing like the road of the crowd, whether its 20,000 or 200.

"I've always done van tours on the side, you known, [with] downtime and stuff," he continues. "It's not like it's a mystery what that is. But it is funny: you do a couple 13-hour drives and you're like, 'Oh, man, I can't wait to be back in Foo Fighter land. ...It's a little more comfortable."

Shiflett's latest album, Hard Lessons, is available now. He says that's the most new music we'll be getting from any Foo Fighter for the foreseeable future.
