Earlier this week, Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner's lives were turned upside down when their dog Waldo was struck and killed by a car in a hit and run accident in New York City. Though the driver didn't stop or leave any information after hitting the Alaskan Klee Kai, TMZ reports they cannot be criminally charged because a dog is considered property and the incident was deemed an accident.

According to authorities, the dog got away from its handler and darted into the middle of the road, which determines that it wasn't the driver's intent to kill. As to why they didn't stop after striking the animal, the reason is unknown; however, it's not uncommon for something like this to happen in New York City. Many drivers aren't even aware they hit something and just keep going, distracted by the noise and movement in the city.

The newly weds did file a report with police a few days after the incident occured, but it was simply an accident report not criminal. If they do decide to press charges, it would have to be a civil case requesting financial retribution for the cost of the dog or emotional distress. But first police need to find the person who hit Waldo — as of now there are no suspects and the investigation is still open.

Jonas and Turner are also parents to Waldo's brother, Porky Basquiat Jonas.
