A husband and wife were killed shielding their two-month-old son during a mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas which left 20 people dead. The couple was shopping for back-to-school supplies when shots rang out. When the gunman started firing at Jordan Anchondo, her husband, Andre, jumped in between the shooter and his wife, who spun away to protect their son.

"Her husband was in front of the gunman to protect Jordan, and Jordan was protecting her baby," Monique Terry, Jordan's cousin, told the Guardian. "That explains who she was as a person – she gave everything for her baby."

Andre and Jordan were both hit by gunfire and died from their injuries. Miraculously, their son survived, though he did suffer some injuries as Jordan fell to the ground.

"From the baby's injuries, they said that more than likely my sister was trying to shield him," Jordan's sister Leta Jamrowski explained. "So when she got shot she was holding him, and she fell on him, so that's why he broke some of his bones. So he pretty much lived because she gave her life."

Jordan and Andre were survived by three young children.

"It's very tough. She was the light of our family," Terry said of her cousin. "She brightened up the room. Her laugh was contagious. She always put you in a better mood… She always saw the good in people."
