A California man says his pitbull saved him after a shark latched onto his ankle while he was fishing. James White hooked a six-foot-long sevengill shark and managed to reel it in after a ten-minute struggle. White pulled the massive shark to the shore and began to remove the hook from its mouth. While he was working to remove the hook. the shark fell back into the shallow water and bit into his ankle.

White cried out for help, but the only other fishermen in area were a couple of hundred yards away. That's when his pitbull, Darby, came rushing to his aid. Darby bit into the shark's fin, but it just clamped down harder on White's ankle. He tried to tell Darby to leave, but the dog had other ideas.

"And I told him, 'No back off' and then [Darby] repositioned and grabbed it by the tail," White told KNTV. "He literally ran up the hill with it and pulled it off my leg."

Despite having a punctured artery in his leg, White pulled the shark back to the water where it swam away. He was treated for his injuries, which were relatively minor to what they could have been if Darby hadn't jumped into action.

"He's been a part of the family from day one. Just now a little more," White said. "If it wasn't for him, I would have been a lot worse."
