On Monday (August 19), Billie Eilish earned her first leader on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Bad Guy,” bringing Lil Nas X’s record 19-week stay at No. 1 with “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus to an end.
In tandem with her number-one victory, the track, written by Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell, will also go down in history as the longest-leading Hot 100 of all-time after spending nine total weeks at the runner-up position before topping the chart this week. Not to mention, the 17-year-old is the first recording artist born in the 2000s to have a No. 1 record on the Hot 100, per Billboard.
Nas X and Cyrus were among the first to congratulate the alt pop star when the news broke. “U deserve this!” the 20-year-old rapper tweeted, with the country star adding: “@billieeilish Well deserved. Your persistence paid off. Thanks everybody. It was a hell of a ride.”
This isn't the first time "Bad Guy" has garnered Eilish a record-breaking achievement. Earlier this month, the vocalist's single landed her in the company of Alanis Morissette and Sinead O'Connor as one of the few female solo acts to earn multiple No. 1s on Billboard‘s Alternative Songs list after her "Bury a Friend" reigned at the spot back in May.
Prior to Eilish’s takeover, Nas X’s smash hit single made history in late-July by becoming the longest-running No. 1 single to summit the Billboard Hot 100 Chart at 17 weeks, besting Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s decades-long title with “One Sweet Day” in 1995. At the passing of the torch, Carey responded graciously to Nas X’s accomplishment, tweeting, "Sending love & congrats to @LilNasX on breaking one of the longest running records in music history!"
