Thought you'd never come across a song as catchy and as Frozen's "Let It Go?" Think again! Walt Disney Animation Studios previewed some plot details, unseen film footage AND an all new song from the highly anticipated Frozen sequel at the D23 Expo this weekend. Saving one of their most topical properties for last, the studio's Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee closed out the "Go Behind The Scenes With The Walt Disney Studios" panel with Frozen co-director Chris Buck.
Jennifer and Chris revealed that the first film's songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez have rejoined the creative team to provide music. In fact they were two of the first people they called when the decision was made to develop the project. The co-directors also shared that they were often approached with the question "Why does Elsa have powers?" They are aiming to answer that question within the sequel and also expand upon the narrative of the first film.
Two new faces were announced to be welcomed into the franchise. Evan Rachel Woods (Westworld, True Blood) will provide the voice of Queen Iduna, Anna and Elsa's mother. Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us, American Crime Story) will provide the voice of Lieutenant Mattias, a soldier the sisters encounter on their travels. A brief preview clip was screened showing the Queen cuddling in bed with a young Anna and Elsa, while singing a song. It was the first time Woods had seen footage of her character and replied that the teaser left her "speechless."
It wouldn't be a D23 Expo panel without exclusive footage and the studio did not disappoint this time around. D23 Hall audience members were treated to a lengthy scene in which Elsa is struggling with the decision to embark on a journey to discover the source of a voice she hears inside her head or to stay behind with her loved ones in Arendelle.
It starts with Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Sven and Kristoff playing a game of charades, which ends in Elsa retiring to her room after becoming distracted by a mysterious voice. Kristoff takes the opportunity to try and propose to Anna, however she becomes worrisome over her sister and isn't paying attention to Kristoff's romantic attempts. Anna comforts Elsa by singing themselves to sleep, but the mysterious voice jolts Elsa awake.
She then breaks out into a power ballad (mostly likely set to be titled something like "The Unknown" - a phrase repeated in the chorus). Signed, sealed, delivered - this WILL be a breakout track from the film, it was a a total "Let It Go" 2.0 moment.
The principal cast was then brought on stage to close out the panel with a song. Jonathan Groff, Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel and Josh Gad performed the fall themed "Some Things Never Change" as paper leaves cascaded the exhibition hall.
Frozen 2 is scheduled to premiere on November 22nd 2019.
