J Balvin & Bad Bunny's VMA Performance Was A Trip Down The Rabbit Hole

August 27, 2019

J Balvin and Bad Bunny offered up a colorful feast for their 2019 MTV Video Music Awards performance, reinforcing the Reggaeton hitmakers' knack for style, animation and humor.

During Monday night's (August 26) show at Newark's Prudential Center, the pair walked onto the stage to "Que Pretendes" in colorful eye-popping ensembles that exaggerated their arms and legs. Throughout the number, viewers went down the rabbit hole as the duo walked around a colorful set in their exaggerated forms, all while CGI clouds filled the sky. For their finale, the rappers started to float up in the air because, of course, that's what happens during a J Balvin and Bad Bunny collaborative set. It's the latest offerings from the pair after the release of their Colin Tilley-directed music video for "Cuidao por Ahí," which dropped just a few days ago.

Balvin and Bunny are one of the many acts representing the Latin movement at this year's ceremony. Among the others include Ozuna, Rosalia and CNCO. In addition to performance duties, Balvin was nominated for Best Latin ("I Can't Get Enough" and "Con Altura"), Best Dance ("Say My Name"), Best Choreography ("Con Alura") and Best of Summer ("Con Altura"). Meanwhile, Bunny nabbed honors in the Best Latin category ("Mia").

Before Monday's showing, Balvin sat down with MTV News to discuss the big evening ahead. "If it's not the best one, it's top two in this show," he said of his performance with a smile. "Let me start. This is our first time with a show here. Nah, I got a lot of respect for the OGs and everybody that's been doing an amazing jobs. But to see us as Latinos for the first time, 100 percent we're going to kill it and that I'm for sure."
