The man responsible for the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy, Sirhan Sirhan, had to be taken to the hospital on Friday after he was stabbed by a fellow inmate at a San Diego prison.
According to a statement from the state Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, the stabbed occurred Friday afternoon at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility near San Diego. The statement did not name Sirhan directly, but an anonymous source with direct knowledge of the incident told the Associated Press that he was the victim.
"There was an assault on an inmate on Friday, August 30 at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility at 2:21 p.m.," the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement. “Officers responded quickly, and found an inmate with stab wound injuries. He was transported to an outside hospital for medical care, and is currently in stable condition."
The suspect in the stabbing was placed in administrative segregation away from the rest of the prison population while investigators look into the incident.
TMZ was first to report the stabbing.
Sirhan, 75, was convicted for the murder of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, on June 5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, where he was celebrating a victory in California's Democratic primary. Kennedy had just completed his victory speech when as he walked through the hotel's kitchen, Sirhan shot him three times and wounded three other bystanders. He was originally sentenced to death at his trial in 1969, but that sentence was commuted to life in prison in 1972 when California briefly outlawed capital punishment. He has been denied parole several times.
