An Ohio college student who went home to surprise her family with a visit might end up missing a few days of classes after her mother accidentally shot her, because she believed there was an intruder breaking into her home.
Emergency responders went to the home in Girard on the night of Aug. 30 after the boyfriend of the 18-year-old victim called 911 to report the accidental shooting.
"My girlfriend just came home from college and her mom didn't know, like honestly -- she accidentally shot her and we don't know what to do," the woman's boyfriend told 911 dispatchers, WFMJ reported.
"She accidentally shot her?" the dispatcher asks.
"Yes, I believe in the arm," the boyfriend replies, adding that his girlfriend was bleeding pretty bad from the injury.
Girard Police Chief John Norman told the station that the mother had a valid CCW permit and had been startled by some noises she heard in the kitchen or hallway area.
"She stated that the bedroom door opened where she was at -- and she had a gun readily available and she fired a round at someone coming through the door," Norman told WFMJ.
The mother was distraught after learning she'd just shot her daughter with the .38 special she owned.
Firefighters responded to the 911 call and saw the 18-year-old covered in blood being walked down the driveway with her right bicep wrapped in a towel. Emergency responders took her to a nearby hospital where she was treated and released.
"We will collect all the facts, and we will present it to a Prosecutor, not to be malicious. But we have to present the facts like we would in any other case. At that point the Prosecutor will make a decision whether we will go ahead and charge or not charge in this case," Chief Norman said.
