James Michael Meyer, 72

A 72-year-old man from Dallas, Texas is facing murder charges after police say he shot a burglar in his backyard. James Michael Meyer woke up around 5 a.m. to the sound of somebody trying to break into a shed in his backyard. Meyer told police he grabbed his gun and went outside to confront the burglar.

Meyer found the man using a pickax to try to break down the door and warned him to stop what he was doing. When the suspect took a few steps towards Meyer, he opened fire, and the suspect dropped his ax and fled to a nearby park. Meyer told police he fired one more shot in the direction of the park and then went back to sleep.

A couple of hours later, when he woke up, he noticed a black bag in the park and called 911 after consulting with a lawyer. He refused to answer any of the dispatcher's questions and told police he threw out the spent shell casings.

He was taken into custody, and a judge set his bail at $150,000.
