An Arizona school bus driver has been arrested after police say he intentionally slammed on the brakes out of anger, causing a child to crash into the windshield. Police say that 50-year-old Jamie Tellez became upset with a different boy for throwing trash on the floor of the bus.
Video footage from inside the bus shows the boy trying to throw a piece of paper into a trash can located in the front of the bus. The crumpled-up piece of paper didn't go in and landed on the floor.
Tellez told the boy he "better get [his] a** down there and pick that up right now."
It is unclear what the boy said in response, but Tellez was not happy and threatened him.
"I'm going to f****** knock the s*** out of you," Tellez told the boy before slamming on the brakes, bringing the bus to an abrupt stop in the middle of the road.
Another boy, who was standing near the front seat, went flying into the windshield. His head hit the glass so hard that it caused it to crack. The bus driver then grabbed that boy by his backpack and tossed him back into another child and started berating them.
The two boys got off the bus a short while later without incident. When the boy got home, his parents took him to the hospital with injuries to his head and hip.
Tellez was charged on counts of child abuse, threatening, reckless driving, and endangerment. He was placed on unpaid leave and has been "recommended for termination" by Mesa Public Schools.
