The University of Rhode Island is investigating reports of a person filming students near the public restrooms in two residence halls on the Kingston campus. The co-ed dorms have shared bathrooms and shower facilities, and the university's police department advised students to "exercise additional awareness" when showering.
Authorities have yet to identify the suspect, but witnesses described him as being between 5'8" and 5'10" with dark, curly hair that is short on the sides.
School officials said they would increase patrols in the dorms and have advised student-housing staff to pay more attention to the areas near the showers.
The news has left many students unsettled.
"This morning, I was, like, actually having an anxiety attack when I was taking a shower because I was really afraid," freshman Nadia Darosa told WJAR.
One student told the station that he was about to take a shower when he received an email from the school about the voyeur.
"I got the email this morning when I was about to take a shower, and uh, I'm not doing that now," said Alex Roath.
Officials are asking students for help identifying the suspect and have told them to immediately call the campus police if they see him filming near the bathrooms.
