Chely Wright recently opened up about a stroke she had a year ago on Friday, November 1. The country singer turned to social media to share details about the incident in hopes that her story will encourage people to pay attention to their bodies and understand the symptoms associated with a stroke.
Wright, 49-years-old, explained that a year ago she had a stroke but didn't go to the hospital for a few days because neither she or her wife, Lauren, recognized the symptoms. Wright had a lingering migraine and with an upcoming show, she decided to go to the emergency room at Lenox Hill Hospital.
"The doctor I saw— whom I’d seen before— was troubled by some the symptoms of that day’s headache," she explains.
Wright, who was at the time 48-years-old, says she had a brief moment where she considered that she might've had a stroke, however, she ultimately chose to ignore it. "The reason I'm sharing this is so you all might take a moment to refresh your understanding of stroke and the symptoms of a stroke," she writes to social media. "Pay attention to your body and encourage loved ones to do the same."
In conclusion she reminds everyone that she is "okay and very grateful to have access to quality medical care." She adds, "As we all know, not everyone in America has that luxury. We have to fix that."
According to WebMD, signs of a stroke include sudden weakness or numbness in the face, arm or leg on one side of the body, loss of vision, loss of balance, severe headache and unexplained dizziness.
Wright is currently touring in support of her most recent EP, Revival. She's set to perform Sunday evening on Mountain Stage at the Cultural Center Theater in Charleston, West Virginia.
