Police in Maryland say a man was stabbed to death Monday night outside a Popeyes restaurant when two men got into a fight over the fast-food chain's chicken sandwich.
Director Jennifer Donelan, of the Prince George's County Police Department, told reporters on Monday night the fight began inside the Popeyes located in Oxon Hill, then moved outside. The fight escalated and a 28-year-old man was later found with stab wounds by police. The victim was rushed to a local hospital, where he later died.
"This individual was in line, a line specifically for the sale of the sandwich, when another customer and he got into an altercation," she said. "That ended with the victim being stabbed outside of the business."
The popular chicken sandwich returned to stores over the weekend after a two-month hiatus after it quickly sold out at restaurants nationwide when it became a social media darling online.
"Somebody cut in front of the other. For you to get that angry over anything, for that type of anger to develop into this type of violence, again, is a very sad and tragic day."
Donelan is asking for help in identifying the suspect, calling on people in the store to come forward and for the suspect to turn himself in.
"Knowing these details and knowing what happened here and knowing that a life was taken… it is hard to put into words," Donelan said. "I can't find the right words to describe what the man did to this innocent victim."
Popeyes has not commented on the stabbing.
