Ed Sheeran came out of his “retirement” over the weekend to perform an event for one of his famous friends.

The English singer-songwriter delivered a surprise gig for Gordon Ramsay’s daughter Matilda’s 18th birthday at London’s Cuckoo Club in Mayfair on Saturday night (November 16). According to The Sun, Sheeran played a five-song set for the birthday girl and her hundreds of friends before leading the crowd to sing Happy Birthday.

As seen in fan-shot videos from the performance, Sheeran performed in an all-black outfit and with a surprisingly shorter hairstyle as he strummed out tunes with his acoustic guitar. “Tilly’s bash was next level," said an attendee. "It was clear Gordon had spared no expense in making sure it really was a night to remember. Ed is Tilly’s favorite singer so it meant the world to her that he was there, even though his set didn’t come cheap.”

The insider also noted that Tilly’s black-tie celebration was James Bond-themed and featured all sorts of custom decorations, including a 007 ice sculpture made for drinking shots out of.

Sheeran’s latest performance comes just months after the superstar announced he would be taking a break from performing live to spend time with new wife Cherry Seaborn. The musician broke the news during the final show of his “Divide” at Ipswich’s Chantry Park in August. “As you may or not know, I've been on the Divide tour for over two years now and this is the last day of the whole thing," Sheeran revealed at the time. "There is something very bittersweet about it. I love that you guys are here and we are ending it in Ipswich. This is my last gig for probably 18 months."

Prior to making the retirement announcement, Sheeran had just released his new, collab-heavy extended play, No. 6 Collaborations, the vocalist’s most recent project to drop since 2017’s Divide.
