Jennifer Lopez Says She Acted In, Produced 'Hustlers' For Free

In her new cover story for GQ's Men of the Year issue, the Hollywood titan, who was named the mag's Icon of the Year, spoke about the stripper drama, admitting she worked on it for nothing. "I do things because I love them. I didn't get paid a whole bunch of money for Hustlers," she said to GQ. "I did it for free and produced it. I bank on myself. That’s the Jenny From the Block. I do what I want, I do what I love."
While Lopez was not compensated up front for her film, it's likely she will profit from the financial success of the project via STX Entertainment, the studio that financed the drama. However, if Lopez doesn't score any Academy Awards love for the film, it still stands as a highlight in her filmography as the highest opening film of her career with an estimated $33.2 million.
"It became a movement," Lopez said of the project. "This is our movie, where we run sh*t. They know it’s all women producers, woman director, woman writer, all women starring in it. We’ve been watching men take advantage of women in movies for a long time, so it was a fun ride to see the tables turned."
Elsewhere in the interview, the triple-threat explained that she was drawn to her character, Ramona, because the stripper honcho was so independent from men. "She was so self-sufficient," she said. "For me, who grew up with my sister sleeping in the same bed, and then went from one relationship to the other, playing that character, and having to be that independent and in charge, I was just like, ‘God, this is so empowering.'"
