Crosby passed away just over a month before the TV special aired, passing on October 14th at the age 74. The song had been recorded 5 weeks prior to his passing on September 11th. The collaboration was unusual to say the least, with the legendary actor/singer teaming with one of the biggest, and most unique rock stars of the time, David Bowie.
