Van Halen bassist Wolfgang Van Halen has proven to be a class act after 17-year-old pop star Billie Eilish admitted she’d never heard of the classic rock band.
During a segment on Jimmy Kimmel, Eilish was playfully grilled about music and pop culture references from 1984 – when Kimmel was her age.
She recognised Madonna and Cyndi Lauper… but fell short when it came to Huey Lewis, Run DMC, The Cosby Show, Mr. T or what a Cabbage Patch Kid was.
When Kimmel asked Eilish if she could name any of Van halen’s songs, she responded with “…who?”
Of course, the internet went berserk – both in defending her and disbelief at the teen’s lack of vital classic rock knowledge.
But it was Wolfgang Van Halen who stepped in and diffused all discussion with one classy tweet:
“If you haven’t heard of @billieeilish, go check her out. She’s cool. If you haven’t heard of @VanHalen, go check them out. They’re cool too.
“Music is supposed to bring us together, not divide us. Listen to what you want and don’t shame others for not knowing what you like.”

Thing is, Eilish seemed to foreshadow the entire debate during the segment.
“It’s weird,” she said. “It’s like the whole universe is trying to pit every artist against each other. It’s so weird.”
Kimmel also noted the clear generation gap
“If you asked me questions about 1943… I probably wouldn’t know the answers either,” he said.
