Two high school students from Wyoming were disciplined after they showed up for a spirit day at Riverton High School dressed as members of the Ku Klux Klan. The theme of the spirit day was "white-out," in which students showed up dressed wearing white clothing.
A photograph was shared on Snapchat of the two students walking into the building wearing the white robes and pointed hats associated with the group.
When school officials learned about the boys' attire, they were pulled out of class to speak with administrators. The students were disciplined, but the school did not provide details of their punishment.
"I believe that these actions were inappropriate, it was dealt with immediately, we are not going to tolerate anything that begins to look like it has racial overtones at all, and that was the basis for the disciplinary action," Terry Snyder, the school's district superintendent said in a statement. "We were very disheartened that any of our students would do that. We live in a diverse community, and the district would never tolerate such action among our students."
Snyder said that the students did not realize the full impact their actions would have.
"It seems to be a very poor decision," Snyder said. "They did not have an understanding of the impact that would create, but they do now."
