The wait is over. Lil Wayne just dropped his highly-anticipated thirteenth studio album, Funeral.
The rapper’s long-awaited record, released via Young Money Entertainment, Republic and Universal on January 31, comes fully-loaded with 24 tracks and a bevy of features on records like “I Don’t Sleep” featuring Takeoff, “Bing James” with Jay Rock and the Big Sean and Lil Baby-assisted track “I Do It.” With guest appearances from 2 Chainz, Adam Levine, The Dream, Lil Twist, the late XXXTentacion and others, Tunechi’s latest offering finds the emcee in good company.
Funeral comes after years of white-knuckling from the lyricist, who first teased the project four years ago. Although he would go on to release his 2018 album, Tha Carter V, in 2018, Weezy hadn’t released many promising details as for when fans could expect a sample from his former project up until last week when he shared a clip signaling Funeral’s arrival. In the video, the “Dreams” star teased the project with the line, “Welcome to the funeral, yeah, closed casket as usual.”
While promoting the record in a recent radio appearance in his hometown, the NOLA musician revealed his formula for acclimating to this new era of hip-hop.
“What the new thing is for me is actually trying to put out music that sounds a little more like today’s music,” he said. “What that means for me … is adding hooks. I forget about hooks. I forget ’em. Somebody gotta come in the booth and stop me from rapping, like, ‘This is where you stop it and add a hook.’”
