As light snow fell in Gobbler's Knob, Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow and predicted an early spring. As a giant crowd gathered, Phil stepped out into the cold weather but did not see his shadow, which means warm weather is on the way.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Phil's predictions have been correct about 40% of the time since 2009. The Weather Channel is forecasting that spring will come early for those who live in the southern parts of the country, while those who live in the north might see colder than average temperatures in March and April.
Residents in Punxsutawney have been celebrating Groundhog Day since 1887. He has predicted six more weeks of winter 104 times during that time. Last year, Phil also predicted an early spring.
In New York City, Staten Island Chuck also predicted an early spring.
