Music legend Brian Wilson is asking fans to try and stop an upcoming Beach Boys concert in Nevada.
Wilson and fellow co-founder Al Jardine say were apparently outraged to learn that the touring version of their band is scheduled to play a trophy hunters convention on Wednesday.
"It has been brought to my attention that on Wednesday, February 5, The Beach Boys touring group licensed by Mike Love are headlining the Safari Club International Convention in Reno, Nevada," Wilson said in a statement. "This organization supports trophy hunting, which both Al and I are emphatically opposed to. There's nothing we can do personally to stop the show, so please join us in sighing the petition."
A Tweet from Wilson's account contained a link to a Change.org petition, "Tell The Beach Boys To Stop Supporting Trophy Hunting!"
The convention features an estimated 870 companies selling trophy hunting vacations, exotic animal parts and other spoils and accouterments of the sport. The convention's keynote speaker this year is Donald Trump Jr.
The petition notes that "an estimated 20,000 animals from protected species will be killed in 2020," including elephants, hippos, sharks, lions and others. It urges the Beach Boys to pull out of the show and "publicly state their opposition to this sick 'sport' of killing animals for 'fun.'"
The petition initially had a goal of 75,000 signatures. As of midday Tuesday, the petition was at 92,410 signatures and upped its goal to 150,000.
Wilson, who was the Beach Boys' band leader and primary songwriter during its early years, has seldom performed live with the band since the mid-'60s, when he stepped back to focus on studio production and composing. Jardine stopped performing live with the band in 1998.
