Jennifer Lopez’s Super Bowl halftime show was filled with powerful messages.

In case you missed her explosive performance with Shakira Sunday night (February 3), J.Lo’s set was loaded with everything from surprise guests to even more surprising political statements. Along with a special cameo by Columbian star J Balvin and a stellar solo moment from her 11-year-old daughter, Emme, the Puerto Rican superstar used the platform to send a strong message of Latinx pride in more ways than one.

One moment, in particular, appeared when Emme sang “Let’s Get Loud” while sitting in an illuminated cage structure alongside a group of young kids. Many viewers recognized the imagery as a way of raising awareness about the controversial treatment of immigrants at the Mexican-United States border.

As Lopez lightly touched on the subject in an Instagram post featuring behind-the-scenes footage leading up to her Super Bowl show. “These moments were captured just minutes before we hit the stage last night,” she captioned the clip.

She continued: “All I want my girls, the little girls on stage with me and all over the world to know is how to use their voices and be proud of everything they are. Other people can try to build walls, keep us out or put us in cages. We are proud to recognize that all of us together are what makes this beautiful country truly great.”

Shortly after Emme’s big Super Bowl debut, Lopez doubled down on her prideful statement by performing “Born In the USA” while flaunting a feathered Puerto Rican flag. “I don’t think we were trying to be heavy-handed with anything,” she expressed to BuzzFeed News of the presentation. “I think we were just celebrating all that is beautiful about this country — Puerto Rico being part of this country.”
