Max Von Sydow, a prolific actor known for acting in more than 100 movies and television series has died at the age of 90, his family announced.
The Swedish-born actor, who was best known for his turns in films like "The Seventh Seal" and TV series like HBO's "Game of Thrones," passed away on Sunday. Some of Von Sydow's other film credits included "Hannah and Her Sisters" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
Representatives with Diamond Management said "it is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max."
Von Sydow was nominated for two Oscars during his career, including one in 1988 for his role in "Pelle the Conqueror" and a best supporting actor nomination for his role in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" in 2011. He first gained noriiety after he worked with Bergman on several movies, including "The Seventh Seal."
His height and slim build gave him an imposing screen presence that was used to great effect in many of his roles, including as Jesus in "The Greatest Story Ever Told" and Father Lankester Merrin in "The Exorcist."
Director Edgar Wright mourned the star's passing on Twitter, calling Von Sydow "an iconic presence."
"Max Von Sydow, such an iconic presence in cinema for seven decades, it seemed like he'd always be with us. He changed the face of international film with Bergman, played Christ, fought the devil, pressed the HOT HAIL button & was Oscar nominated for a silent performance. A god," Wright wrote.
Von Sydow's career was more diverse and impactful than any actor imaginable. He worked with Bergman, Huston, Scorsese, Lynch, Allen, and Spielberg, and acted in films as varied as The Seventh Seal, Escape To Victory, and Hannah & Her Sisters. A gigantic loss. #maxvonsydow https://t.co/IxE3umeoFC
