We can now count Record Store Day 2020 among the staggering number of nationwide events to have been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year's Record Store Day was originally scheduled for April 18, but has been rescheduled to Saturday, June 20.

"We think this gives stores around the world the best chance to have a profitable, successful Record Store Day, while taking into consideration the recommendations of doctors, scientists, the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, and the need to be good citizens of both local and worldwide communities," wrote the Record Store Day organizers in a statement.

Record Store Day was initially conceived by independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the rich and unique cultural contributions of record stores.

There are nearly 1,400 independently owned record stores in the U.S. and thousands more internationally. The first Record Store Day took place in 2008; it has since grown to include stores on every continent in the world but Antarctica.

Artists of all genres typically compile exclusive releases to help drive traffic to independent stores on Record Store Day. You can see a full list of this year's releases here.
