Thai Town Overrun By Monkeys Since There Are No Tourists To Feed Them

Attempts to stop the spread of coronavirus have had all sorts of consequences, from concert cancellations to schools getting shut down. Plenty of people had to scrap or alter their vacation plans too, and there are many ramifications from that as well, but one no one really expected was a town being overrun by monkeys.
The Lopburi province in Thailand is home to hundreds of macaques monkeys. Visitors to the country make it a point to stop in the area so they can interact with the primates and feed them. Well with a lot fewer tourists coming around, the monkeys need to fend for themselves when it comes to food. A local shopkeeper captured footage of what this looks like as two rival gangs of the macaques fought over a single banana.
The resident who filmed the video said that one set of monkeys lives in the nearby temples while another lives in the city, and they are typically separated by train tracks. She stated that this is the first time she has ever seen them clash, explaining, "I think the monkeys were very, very hungry. There's normally a lot of tourists here to feed the monkeys but now there are not as many, because of the coronavirus. They went crazy for a single piece of food. I've never seen them this aggressive."
Not surprisingly, Twitter is freaking out over the footage.
Of course, you’ll recall that the original novel of THE PLANET OF THE APES begins with a pandemic virus. Just saying... #CoronaOutbreak #OurMonkeyOverlords #UrkoForLeader pic.twitter.com/Ffl32GpmHP

The odds of us being in the Planet Of The Apes dystopia timeline just went up. https://t.co/QimET2lYh9

No word on if there are plans to get more food to the monkeys to prevent further issues.
