A 51-year-old man terrorized Nova Scotia for more than 12-hours, leaving at least 16 people dead over the weekend. The incident began on Saturday (April 18) night when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were called a house in the small town of Portapique. When officers arrived, they found several bodies, including Constable Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year veteran of the RCMP.
Officials identified the suspect as Gabriel Wortman and warned the public he may be wearing a police uniform. For the next 12 hours, authorities engaged in a massive manhunt and found multiple crime scenes with more victims.
Officials finally located Wortman at a truck stop about 22 miles away in Enfield. They initially announced they had Wortman in custody, but later said that he died. No details about his death were released.
Authorities have not identified a motive for the killing spree. They believe he may have known his first victims and then started killing at random.
