Demi Lovato spoke candidly about her experience on Sonny with a Chance.
Nearly a decade after the show came to an end, the “Anyone” singer officially reunited with her former co-stars of the Disney Channel series in a virtual reunion last night. During the 30-minute broadcast, Lovato — who played Sonny from 2009 until her 2011 exit — caught up with castmates Tiffany Thornton, Allisyn Ashley Arm, Doug Brochu, Sterling Knight, Audrey Whitby, Matthew Scott Montgomery, Shayne Topp and Damien Haas to reminisce about the show and where everyone is now.
"I went to rehab. Several times!” Lovato quipped to break the ice, before praising Thornton as an “inspiration” while she sought help after leaving the show.
"When I went away to treatment for the first time, you were my biggest inspiration coming out of it because you dealt with all of those pressures of being a woman on TV," she told Thornton, who played Tawni on the show. "I looked at that as, 'I wish I had that so bad.' Yes, I probably was happier in my head with whatever I looked like at the time. But I'm so much happier now with the mentality that you have. I look back now and I'm like, Man, it's a shame that we wasted any energy on what we wore on set.”
Speaking of wardrobe, Thornton recalled the “I’m Ready” star’s dressing warm being “98 degrees” every day, to which Lovato quipped, "I had an eating disorder and I was underweight and freezing! … People would come in and I'd be covered in a blanket and people would say, 'Why is it 80 degrees in here?' I would be like, 'Because I'm freezing.' They would be like, 'Oh my god, what's wrong with you?'"
Elsewhere in the reunion, the Grammy-nominated songbird admitted to feeling “miserable and angry” because she was so “overworked” on the show at the time. Even though she was surprised the series continued without her, Lovato said she couldn't be happier for her co-stars now.
