Like the rest of the world, the fashion industry is having to adapt during these unprecedented times; one fashion editor leading the charge is Carine Roitfeld.
Earlier this week, the CR Fashion Book founder and former editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris announced that the second edition of CR Runway will be produced remotely in collaboration with the amfAR Fund for coronavirus relief efforts.
"We would like to use our runway to create a platform to benefit research on and the fight against COVID-19," Roitfeld said in a statement.
The first-of-its-kind virtual fashion show, titled Fashion Unites, will stream worldwide on Friday (May 1) at 4 p.m. EST (1 p.m. PST), allowing all across the globe the highly-coveted front-row seat.
Kim Kardashian West, Winnie Harlow, Diane von Furstenberg, Hailey Bieber, Karlie Kloss, Virgil Abloh, Alexander Wang, Heron Preston, Alessandra Ambrosio, Ashley Graham, Adriana Lima, Joan Smalls, Amber Valletta, Irina Shayk and many more will be featured in the 30-minute show, which was self-filmed by each participant from the comfort of their homes.
As for the models, they'll be wearing pieces from their closets for the runway portion, all of which styled remotely by Roitfeld and her team.
"Styling the models virtually was definitely a new experience as we are obviously used to being face to face and making adjustments in-person together so this situation was certainly unique," Roitfeld shared. Adding, “Embracing fashion as the creative expression through which to support the health and safety of our global communities, we hope this show can offer a small moment of hope, inspiration and uplifting connection for those who are doing their part to self-isolate. A modest contribution as our world unites to collectively weather the storm of this pandemic together."
The Fabien Constant-directed show, which will be hosted by the head of YouTube Fashion and Beauty Derek Blasberg, will also feature a musical performance.
While the global event will be free to view, Roitfeld and other participants are making personal donations to amfAR's COVID-19 fund in hopes of kick-starting others' giving.
“In times of great uncertainty, it is even more important that we support one another, with material efforts and also with our voices, actions, talents, and common joys and passions,” Roitfeld said. “It is also important to me to keep going and moving forward. With so many lives disrupted and reshaped, I wanted to embrace creativity as a way to inspire and unite everyone and contribute to the fight against COVID-19 in that way.”
