Marshmello recruited Halsey for a vulnerable new song.
On “Be Kind,” the singer-songwriter takes the lead on a track that contemplates the sincerity of a relationship with someone who struggles to commit. Heartbreak starts to set in as Halsey’s attempts to win her beloved’s trust and devotion go unreciprocated as her sweetheart begins to stray.
“I don't know why you hide from the one/ And close your eyes to the one/ Mess up and lie to the one that you love/ When you know you can cry to the one/ Always confide in the one/ You can be kind to the one that you love,” the songbird coos in the emotionally-charged chorus.
Despite the record’s sentimental soft core, “Be Kind” has all the pop bop vibes of a Song of Summer contender — and no one sensed that more than Marshmello. “As soon as I heard the song, I was instantly obsessed,” the DJ expressed of the record in a recent interview. “Halsey and I connected and were both on the same page with what we wanted the final outcome to be, and it turned out great.”
Marshmello has a knack for playing on the strengths of the artists he’s teamed up with in the past, as evidenced on previous jams like “Wolves” with Selena Gomez, “Silence” with Khalid, and “Friends” with Anne-Marie.
Halsey’s latest feature comes just months after releasing her highly-anticipated third studio album, Manic, in January. The project spawned such singles like “Without Me,” “Graveyard,” and “You Should Be Sad.”
