A drone operator is facing immense criticism after flying near the Navy Blue Angels during their recent flyover of Detroit to honor the frontline workers battling the coronavirus pandemic. The footage was posted on Facebook, though it was quickly removed, and featured extreme close-ups as the squadron flew by.
A photojournalist for WJBK in Detroit captured the tiny drone in a photograph of the jets taken from the ground. The small drone was barely noticeable, and it is unlikely the pilots were able to see it as they flew over the city.
The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the matter. All commercial drone pilots must be registered with the FAA, and the rules ban flying in a "careless or reckless manner."
