On Saturday night, an all-star cast of musicians came together with the New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band (PHJB) for the ‘Round Midnight Preserves livestream benefit to raise funds for the Preservation Hall Foundation.
The event was headlined with a rendition of “When the Saints Go Marchin' In” featuring the likes of Paul McCartney (he plays the trumpet!), Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, Irma Thomas, Dave Matthews, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, and Nathaniel Rateliff and members of The Night Sweats.
The rest of the evening was a mix of old footage the included past sets from Beck, Arcade Fire, My Morning Jacket, Alabama Shakes, and the late Sharon Jones, all accompanied by the PHJB and live performances.
Aside from the star-studded collab, a highlight of the night was Grohl's on the Preservation Hall's New Orleans anthem “Come with Me” (1:24:00) and his solo acoustic rendition of “Best of You” (3:42:00). The livestream also featured Foo Fighters performing “In the Clear” at the Preservation Hall, a song they recorded with the PHJB for their documentary Sonic Highways (3:05:20). Live performances also included Costello singing “The River in Reverse” from his porch (2:25:00) and Jim James performing My Morning Jacket’s “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” (2:25:00).
Preservation Hall creative director Ben Jaffe also interviewed actors including Jude Law, Amy Schumer and more throughout the night.
