The Dixie Chicks Change Their Name To The Chicks

The Dixie Chicks have officially dropped "Dixie" from their name. The country trio consisting of Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer, and Martie Maguire will now go by The Chicks.

Their website and social media handles were updated on Thursday morning (June 25) to reflect the name change. A statement from the band members posted on their website simply reads, "We want to meet this moment." In a press statement, they add, "A sincere and heartfelt thank you goes out to ‘The Chicks’ of [New Zealand] for their gracious gesture in allowing us to share their name. We are honored to co-exist together in the world with these exceptionally talented sisters. Chicks Rock!"

The group's name change comes in light of ongoing protests regarding systemic racism in America. Country music group, formerly known as Lady Antebellum recently changed their name to Lady A for similar reasons.

In addition to the name change, the Chicks released a brand new single on Thursday (June 25) titled "March March." The song finds Maines addressing social issues including women's rights, underpaid teachers, gun rights and more. The accompanying music video features footage of current and historical protests and also acknowledges several social activists.

"March March," produced by Jack Antonoff, will appear on the Chicks upcoming fifth studio album, Gaslighter. The project, due out on July 17, is the group's first album in 14 years following 2006's Taking The Long Way.
