Washington Redskins Will Conduct A 'Thorough Review' Of Team's Name

The Washington Redskins announced they are going to conduct a "thorough review" of the team's name. For years, activists have been trying to pressure the Redskins to change their name because it is considered offensive to Native Americans.

"In light of recent events around our country and feedback from our community, the Washington Redskins are announcing the team will undergo a thorough review of the team's name. This review formalizes the initial discussions the team has been having with the league in recent weeks," the Redskins said in a statement.

The decision comes one day after FedEx, which owns the naming rights to the team's stadium, requested the team change their name. Frederick Smith, the chairman, CEO, and president of FedEx owns a minority stake in the Redskins.

Pepsico, a partner with the team, said they have been having discussions over the past few weeks with the NFL and the Redskins about changing the team's name.

Team owner Dan Snyder, who has resisted pressure to change the team's name in the past, said the review will involve multiple stakeholders, including sponsors, former players, and members of the local community.

"This process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League, and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field," Snyder said.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said that he is "supportive of this important step."
