The singers appear together in a quarantine-friendly visual for their collaboration “Past Life,” which finds the pop stars performing their new joint on an Instagram broadcast. The emotional record tells a story of breaking old patterns, forging healthier habits, and finally letting go of the ghosts of one’s past.
The video also transforms the stars’ faces to whisk viewers out of the confines of quarantine to various picturesque landscapes from around the world — from valleys and oceans to mountains and deserts.
Over sweet guitar rhythms and a mid-tempo pop beat, Daniel and Gomez’s voices mesh beautifully in the chorus: “Last night was the last night of my past life/ Got me here like you could never figure me out/ Last night was the last time, was the last time/ I never let you figure me out/ Sitting here, talking to myself/ Thinking how I used to use you, only thing I'm used to/ Last night was the last time, was the last time.”
Daniel initially teased the record on June 21 before the duo got on camera to talk about the track days later. Speaking of her love for the record at the time, Gomez said she was immediately taken with the song on its first spin.
“I loved the fact that it was kinda like a story about all the things that we tend to hold onto and the patterns that we have,” she explained. “And I’m very very vocal about my personal experiences. You know, making decisions that maybe aren’t necessarily healthy for me. There’s something kinda serious. It’s really beautiful.”
