When HBO Max users logged in to the streaming service on launch day back in May, they found a magical surprise—all 8 Harry Potter films were available to stream. Before the new streaming platform officially launched, potential future subscribers were warned that the franchise would not be available on opening day due to a prior licensing agreement. It turned out, though, that they were able to snag those streaming rights in the end.
Despite launching with all the Harry Potter movies in their library, it appears they won't be available on HBO Max for much longer. WarnerMedia announced on Monday (July 20) that the Harry Potter movies will be departing the streaming service next month. As of August 25, the following movies will no longer be on HBO Max: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 and 2.
In addition to the Wizarding World franchise, a number of other movies will also be leaving HBO Max, including Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Dumb & Dumber, Full Metal Jacket, Good Will Hunting, Love Actually, Kill Bill: Volume 1, Kill Bill: Volume 2 and The Spongebob Squarepants Movie.
It's not all bad news for HBO Max subscribers, though. The streaming service is also adding a number of new titles in August. Batman, Batman & Robin, Batman Begins, Batman Forever, Batman Returns, and The Dark Knight will all be joining HBO Max's catalogue, as well as Blade Runner: The Final Cut, Elf, Kung Fu Panda, Ocean’s Eleven and Wedding Crashers.
