The coronavirus pandemic has decimated the airline industry as passengers concerned with getting sick are choosing not to fly. While many airlines have implemented new health and safety protocols to reassure travelers they won't contract COVID-19 while flying, one airline has a unique, and somewhat morbid, plan to attract customers.
Emirates Airlines announced that it is so confident that it is safe to fly, they will pay for the medical expenses or funeral costs of anybody who contracts COVID-19 while traveling. The airline said they will cover up to $176,500 in medical costs, along with $1,765 for funeral expenses if the person dies. Customers can also receive $118 per day for up to 14 days to cover any quarantine expenses they may incur while traveling.
"Emirates is proud to lead the way in boosting confidence for international travel. We know people are yearning to fly as borders around the world gradually re-open, but they are seeking flexibility and assurances should something unforeseen happen during their travel," said H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the Emirates Group chairman and chief executive, in a statement.
All passengers are automatically covered under the new policy, which will be in effect until October 31. The coronavirus insurance will be valid for 31 days after the trip and even applies if you travel to another city.
