The coronavirus has hit many families economically causing a public health crisis and forcing small businesses to shut down. Also, making it more difficult for families to get their hands on healthy food options.
In the midst of the chaos, a group of Chicago teens linked up to turn a liquor store into a fresh food pop-up market. The idea came about when teens in a local organization called By The Hand Club for Kids had an opportunity to voice their concerns in light of the protests and racial injustice. One of the problems mentioned being grocery stores having to close down after looting from the protests.
With the help of local NFL athletes including NFL linebacker Sam Acho, NHL’s Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, and MLB White Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito, the teens were able to raise $500,000 to convert the old store into a fresh market selling fruits, vegetables, and flowers.
