Lauryn's List: Biggest Benefits To Living In A Small Town

Hi, I'm Lauryn, and I loved growing up in a small town.

Growing up on a family apple orchard located on the outskirts of a small Appalachian town in West Virginia was normal. We acknowledged that the grocery store was 45 minutes away, so we prepared. We knew that visitors wouldn't frequent, but they would literally prove to be our nearest and dearest when they did.

Sure, 24-hour restaurants are slim to none, and these small-town map dots aren't exactly a country star's touring hot spot, but life in the country is magical for other reasons, and katydid bugs sing like a world-class chorus.

There are a lot of overlooked benefits to living in a small town. Here are my top 10:

  1. Small towns are friendly places.
  2. Driving everywhere makes things a lot easier.
  3. You can get farm fresh produce straight from the source.
  4. Small town independent book stores
  5. Local politicians are more accessible than big cities
  6. Friends you make in grade school are friends for life.
  7. Going for a drive is an activity all in itself.
  8. Stargazing
  9. State and county fairs are unbeatable
  10. People show up for each other, especially during hard times.

BONUS: Bottle feeding a baby calf will change your life.
