Lauren Akins, wife to country music star, Thomas Rhett, recently released her new memoir, Live In Love: Growing Together Through Life's Changes. In the new book, Akins writes openly about the early days of their relationship and their decision to save sex until marriage.
The couple first met when they were in first grade attending the same elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee. However, they didn't really become close until about five years later when they both went to summer camp.
In high school the two tried dating, although it didn't last long as they went off to college and started dating other people. Eventually, they reconnected when Rhett finally told Akins he still had feelings for her. They dated for a few months before they started to seriously consider marriage.
"See, for as long as we’d been dating other people, even through all the growing up and experimenting we’d done as we both went off to college, we’d both stayed true to our values," Akins shared. "We were both virgins. We’d taken our parents’ words and our youth leaders’ words to heart, and there was something so special about knowing we were starting from the same place as we thought about getting married."
Akins went on to explain that she and Rhett were both "so grateful" that their previous partners shared their values because it helped them stay on the right path before they found one another again.
"If either of us had dated people who didn’t have the same values, who knows what might have happened?" Akins pondered. "I mean, don’t get me wrong, it’s not like we didn’t kiss a ton or get a little too close a few times. We just always made a choice to stop short of breaking the promise we’d made: to save ourselves for marriage."
In December 2011, Rhett proposed to Akins and in October 2012 they officially tied the knot.
"Was it perfect?" Akins wrote of their wedding night. "I don't know how to answer that! We couldn't compare it to anything else, and we didn't have to - because our first time together was just ours."
