A Spike Lee-directed version of David Byrne's American Utopia Broadway show is coming to HBO and HBO Max on October 17.

The acclaimed concert show ran at the Hudson Theatre between October 2019 and February 2020. It featured Byrne and his band performing Talking Heads classics and material from this latest solo album.

The film's world premiere will come September 10 at the Toronto International Film Festival.

"This couldn't have worked out better for this project," Byrne said in February. "Spike Lee directing and Participant [Media] producing: Two socially-engaged teams — well, three if you count us in the band — coming together in what I feel will be something moving, important and unlike anything anyone has seen before."

Byrne has explained that the show presents a version of himself who is contemplating how to exist in the world, how to form relationships. Through music and through his band, Byrne grows comfortable with himself and begins to reach out to make an impact on the larger world.
