The Phoenix City Council is planning to discuss on September 2nd a request to install a "Black Lives Matter" street mural in downtown Phoenix.
The proposed mural, according to the city's agenda, would include the "Black Lives Matter" statement along with painted images of Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez, and John Lewis.
The aim is to have the mural on a downtown city street that has a lower volume of traffic to relieve safety concerns.
Phoenix community members requested approval for the project and plan to meet with the city's Street Transportation Department to address cost, safety, liability, and durability concerns for the mural.
The installation of the street mural would be expected to take at least one week to install and would require a full street closure until the project is completed.
Recently, many cities including New York, Chicago, and Tucson have approved installations of street murals in support of the Black Lives Matter Movement.
The city meeting will be livestreamed at 9 a.m. on September 2nd on the city's website.
