Gabriela Saavedra, a mask maker in Downtown Phoenix, has helped to make and distribute over 500 face coverings during the COVID-19 pandemic. With help from the Phoenix Fire Department she is now able to give a mask to her biggest client yet.

Saavedra told Fox 10 Phoenix, "It's a symbol of our community." The Phoenix on the Garfield Rising statue, which is the symbol of being born again or overcoming, remained without a mask until now. "We thought it would be cool to put a mask on the bird," she said.

The statue is located outside of Garfield Elementary School in the Garfield neighborhood of Phoenix.

Saavedra gave a call to the Phoenix Fire Department for help to get the mask onto the statue and after just a bit of work, the Phoenix was officially masked up.

"I think it looks good," she said. "I hope it inspires people to not just wear a mask to keep our community safe but also to help one another and help out their neighbors."

Saavedra's mask drive is still going on. To receive one of the free masks, click here.
