With Labor Day weekend approaching, Broward County leaders are taking extra steps to ensure that coronavirus numbers stay under control.

The county is continuing to see encouraging trends in numbers so far as it has seen a seven-day positivity rate of just 5.13%.

With the holiday looming, $100 fines will be issued for people not wearing a mask indoors or near others, with code enforcement out patrolling.

Broward Mayor Dale Holness stated, "We now have to prepare for the holiday weekend coming up, which means we're going to see a lot of people coming into town. We want to make sure that they're socially distancing and wearing facial coverings."

Broward's beaches will stay open throughout the holiday weekend and mask fines will be enforced.

This comes in attempts to get and keep the positivity rates below 5%. Holness said that if the county can maintain a positivity rate of less than 5%, they can start talking about reopening bars, nightclubs, and playgrounds. But for now, the city will remain in the lowest phase of opening.

"There could be a resurgence of the virus in September or October. We want to make sure that if that does occur, that we're at the very lowest point we can be," he said. "What we're doing is working and I think we need to continue to do that for the time being."
