After 35 years of laughs, Austin's Cap City Comedy Club is closing its doors for good.

The club originally opened in 1986 with the name "Laff Stop" and changed its name in 1996 to Cap City Comedy Club. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the club planned to close temporarily, but now the closure is permanent.

In a written statement, Margie Coyle, co-owner and manager of the club stated, "We are so thankful that the city of Austin allowed us to thrive for 35 years as Austin's premiere comedy club. There is not a better comedy scene in the country-from our incredible and wonderful staff to the amazing local comedians, and to all of the touring/celebrity comedians who performed at our club and kept us on our game- we love you all and thank you for 35 years at 8120."

In addition to the many local comedians that the club hosted, there were a number of celebrity guests who performed there as well including Ellen DeGeneres, Ron White, and Joe Rogan, among others.

The future of the club is unknown at this time but a letter from the club to the city alludes to a possible return. The letter read, "So live standup in Austin will be re-ignited at some point and please support. Cap City may be back but different."
