Selena Gomez got candid during an interview with Allure as their latest cover star. The singer/actor/producer/entrepreneur opened up about a number of topics, including the pressures she's experienced throughout her career, her mental health, the Black Lives Matter movement, and so much more.
A few years ago, apart from feeling criticism over her fluctuating weight while dealing with health issues, she also felt pressure to be "overtly sexual" in her music videos. She told Allure, "I just did things that weren't really me." She added, "There was pressure to seem more adult on my album, Revival. [I felt] the need to show skin... I really don't think I was [that] person."
Revival was released back in 2015 and included songs like "Good For You," "Hand to Myself," "Same Old Love" and more.
Elsewhere in the interview, Selena opened up about the pressures of her early career, starring on Disney Channel's Wizards of Waverly Place. With her career taking off, her personal life was also put under the microscope. She told Allure, "My personal life was out everywhere. It felt very claustrophobic and just ... I felt very trapped."
Gomez also talked about Black Lives Matter and what motivated her to give up her Instagram account to influential leaders of the movement. She explained, "There was so much that I didn't know. I was so upset with how people were being treated, and having people in my life that have dealt with that for years, telling me stories that they've never told me before."
Selena added, "That's why what I did with my social media was extremely important — having all of these different voices share their experiences. I didn't want to be someone that was going to just post something [or make a] donation."
