Hazy skies have descended upon Northeast Ohio as wildfires blaze on the west coast.
The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday (September 9) that smoke from the fires in California, Oregon and Washington have reached Ohio, and will continue filtering through the skies, casting a “very hazy and kinda a grayish color.”
The National Weather Service added that GOES-16 images show clouds below 1,000 feet coming off the Lake Erie coast, and smoke higher than 30,000 feet.
Fox8 reported that some Ohioans might be able to smell smoke, but there are no air quality alerts for the area at this time.
We had some questions on social media regarding wildfire #smoke verses low clouds. Image from GOES-16 showing low clouds below 1000 feet coming off #LakeErie near and smoke much higher up at 30,000 feet this afternoon. #OHwx #PAwx #NWS #Cleveland #Ohio #WestCoastFires pic.twitter.com/Pj4iPVvYD5

Hundreds of homes have been affected and seven people have died as a result of the fires as of Thursday (September 10) morning. Oregon Governor Kate Brown said the fires “could be the greatest loss of human lives and property due to a wildfire in our state’s history.”
